INTRODUCTION TO ANGKOR ARCHEOLOGICAL PARK

This section as intended as a guide for visiting the monuments at Angkor. It can be either read in advance of a visit or afterwards to reinforce the experience, or used at the sites to enable the visitor to be an active spectator. Historical quotes from early visitors to Angkor are included where appropriate to try to capture the spirit of its past glory.

Legends and symbolism are also included whenever feasible to give the visitor additional background for a better appreciation of Angkor.

12345 travel adventure Angkor Wat,Cambodia 05

VISITING THE MONUMENTS

It is based on the amount of time the visitor has to spend at Angkor and take into consideration the roads, proximity of the temples, and favorable light conditions.

For some temples it is important to begin at the principal entrance to perceive the space and decoration as the builder intended, and entrances are indicated in the text. The monuments are oriented according to the four points of a compass which can be used as a point of reference. the temple of Angkor Wat is covered in detail in this book because of its importance, complexity and size.

12345 travel adventure Angkor Wat,Cambodia

Angkor provides wonderful photographic opportunities. the monuments and the surrounding jungle afford unlimited textural and lighting opportunities for composing a picture.

12345 travel adventure Angkor Wat,Cambodia 03

Clouds are common and tend to diffuse the light which is somewhat flat even though it is intense. As most of the temples face east the best lighting conditions are in the morning except for Angkor Wat where the best light is in the afternoon because it faces west. the temples surrounded by jungle such as Ta Prohm and Prah Khan can be photographed with good results when the sun is directly overhead and shining through the foliage. Just as one is never prepared for the enormous size and overwhelming beauty of Angkor, one is never ready to leave it. With photographs and visions etched in memory, one need never say good-by to Angkor, for its magic will go with you wherever fate and the gods may take you to colour your thoughts and dreams to life’s very end. The name of the monuments at Angkor are often modern ones designated by Cambodians or early European travellers. In publications by the French the enclosures of a temple are numbered starting from the central sanctuary and progressing towards the enclosing walls. The system used in this book reverses the order for the convenience of the visitor. Thus the first enclosing wall the visitor encounters when entering a temple is number one. the numbers ascend from the exterior to the interior of the monument. In many distances, though, only traces of the enclosing walls, particularly the outer one, remain.

The capital city of Denpasar is not a major tourism destination, but it is interesting for those wanting to experience more local lifestyle. There are several good golf courses in Bali to enjoy. Bali has an estimated 20.000 beautiful Hindu temples, many of which are easily accessed. The most famous temples are Uluwatu, Besakih and Tanah Lot. The rugged interior of Bali offers not only great hillside scenery, volcanoes, hot springs and lush rainforests, but also plenty of activities from trekking in Bali to white water rafting and horseback riding. The large Bali Barat National Park offers also opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife viewing.

Bali travel information and practical tips

Bali has a tropical climate where the temperature is warm around the year. There is a distinct rainy season from October to March and a dry season from April to September, although rains can occur at any time of the year.

The coastal areas in Bali are hotter than the high mountain areas in the interior, but there is a sea breeze that tempers the heat. The mountainsides also receive more rain than coastal areas. The main tourist season in Bali is in July and August, as well as during Christmas and New Year.

Traveling to Bali is usually done by air via the capital city Denpasar. It has an international airport that receives flights to Bali from all over the world. You can also travel to Bali by a ferry from the many other islands in Indonesia.

bali

Public transport on Bali is handled by buses and local minivans called bemos. There are also special tourist shuttles running between the major tourist destinations, and you can easily rent a car in Bali, as well as a motorcycle or bicycle, or charter a minivan with a driver. However, remember that the traffic in Bali is often chaotic.

Accommodation & services. There are plenty of hotels in Bali to choose from, including cheap hostels. Restaurants in Bali and other tourist services are also widely available in the main tourist centers. Due to the importance of tourism on the island, English is a common third language in Bali, and all people in service professions speak at least a bit of it.

Safety. Bali’s popularity as a tourism destination has unfortunately lured also terrorists into the island. There have been terrorist attacks against tourists on Bali in 2002 and 2005. Therefore, security is now tight in nightclubs and restaurants frequented by foreigners. You should also be careful for petty crime such as scams and pickpocketing, but in general, Bali is still a quite safe travel destination.

Taormina, Sicily Travel Guide – Get to Know Taormina

Taormina, Sicily Travel Guide – Get to Know Taormina

Taormina Overview:

Taormina has been one of Sicily’s top travel destinations since it became part of the European Grand Tour in the 19th century and Sicily’s first resort.

Taormina has remnants of its Greek and Roman habitation, a fine medieval quarter and castle ruins, and modern shops and restaurants. Perched on the side of Monte Tauro, the town offers fantastic views of the coast and Mt. Etna volcano. Below the town are excellent beaches where you can swim in the clear sea water. Although Taormina can be visited all year, spring and fall are the best times. July and August are hot and crowded.

Taormina 02

Taormina Location:

Taormina is 200 meters above sea level on Monte Tauro on Sicily’s east coast. It’s 48km south of Messina, Sicily’s closest city to the mainland. Mt. Etna volcano is about a 45 minute drive southwest of Taormina and farther south is Catania, one of Sicily’s largest cities.

Taormina Transportation:

Taormina is on the train line between Messina and Catania and can be reached by train directly from Rome. The station, Taormina-Giardini, is 2km below the center served by shuttle buses.

Regular buses run from Palermo, Catania, the airport, and Messina arriving in the center of town. The closest airport, Fontanarossa in Catania, is an hour drive and has flights to some Italian and European cities (Italy Airports Map). A car ferry runs from the mainland to Messina, then take the A18 along the coast about 30 minutes. Driving in the center is limited. There are two large parking lots on the outskirts.

Taormina 03

Taormina Restaurants:

Taormina has many excellent restaurants in all price categories. It’s a great place for seafood and outdoor dining, often with views. Near the duomo, Casa Grugno serves cuisine that’s a mix of modern and traditional in a medieval Gothic-Catalan residence. Ristorante da Lorenzo, Via Roma 12, serves seafood on a terrace overlooking the sea. Traditional Sicilian food is served at Ristorante la Griglia, Corso Umberto 54, on an outside terrace during nice weather. An inexpensive choice is Porta Messina, next to the city walls at Largo Giove Serapide 4.

Taormina Hotels:

Taormina hotels on Venere (book direct) have user ratings and reviews, hotel photos, descriptions, and map for 2 to 5 star hotels. Top rated hotels are the 4-star Villa Carlotta (book direct) in a garden setting overlooking the sea and Hotel Villa Angela in a park setting with views of Mt. Etna and the bay. A less expensive option right in the historic center is the 2-star Hotel Victoria. My friends recommend Atahotel Capotaormina below Taormina with a private beach. There’s also a small youth hostel, Ulisse, with sea views at Via S Francesco di Paola 9.

Taormina 04

Taormina Shopping:

Taormina’s center, especially Corso Umberto, is a good place for shopping. There are many shops selling high quality items, mostly from Sicily, although you’ll find designer fashions and jewelry from mainland Italy, too. There are shops for fashion, jewelry, crafts, mosaics ceramics, puppets, porcelain dolls, and other souvenirs.

Taormina Festivals and Events:

Taormina Arte festival runs from June through August. Plays, concerts, and a film festival are held outdoors in the Greek Theater during summer. Madonna della Rocca is celebrated the second weekend of September with a religious procession and feast. Taormina has one of the best Carnavale celebrations in Sicily. In May there’s a traditional costume and Sicilian cart fair.

Taormina Attractions:

Taormina’s attractions include the Greek theater, medieval quarter, shopping and beaches. See Taormina Top Sights and Attractions for details about what to see and to in and near Taormina.

Positano Visitors Guide and Tourist Attractions

Positano Visitors Guide and Tourist Attractions

Positano Overview:

Positano is one of Italy’s most romantic and luxurious vacation spots. Built vertically on the face of a cliff, Positano started out as a fishing village and became popular with writers and artists in the 1950’s. Today it’s a fashionable resort yet still retains its charm. Positano is a pedestrian town (with many stairs) and its pretty pastel colored houses and flowers make it very picturesque. Because of its mild climate, Positano can be visited year round although high season is April – October.

Positano Visitors Guide

Positano Location:

Positano is at the center of the famous Amalfi Coast on the Amalfi Peninsula south of Naples (see Amalfi Coast Map). Just across from Positano are Le Galli islands, three islets believed to be the residence of the mythical Sirens from Homer’s Odyssey.

Getting to Positano :

The closest airport is Naples (see Italy Airport Map). The best ways to get to Positano are by boat or by bus. The road leading to Positano is difficult to drive and parking, available above town, is very limited, although some hotels offer parking. Positano can be reached by bus from either Sorrento or Salerno, both of which can be reached by train from Naples. For train or driving details, see How to get from Rome to Amalfi Coast.

Ferries to Positano leave from Sorrento and Amalfi and one ferry daily makes the trip from Salerno (see Metro del Mare).

Positano Visitors Guide 02

Positano Transportation and Orientation:

The best way to get around Positano is by foot as most of Positano is a pedestrian zone. If you arrive by bus, you’ll be near Chiesa Nuova at the top of Positano. Winding stairs, called the Thousand Steps, and the main street lead down through town to the beach. There’s a bus along Positano’s one main street that you can take up or down the hill. Porters are available at the start of the pedestrian zone to help with luggage. From Positano it’s possible to visit some villages, beaches, and countryside on foot. There are also car and water taxis for transport to nearby villages and beaches.

Positano Shopping:

Positano has many high-end fashion boutiques and Moda Positano is a recognized fashion label. It’s also a great place to buy sandals and footwear, made in Positano. Shoemakers can make shoes on request while you wait. Limoncello, a lemon alcoholic drink, is popular all over the Amalfi Coast. As there are many lemon trees on the Amalfi Coast, you’ll find lots of things with lemons, including pottery decorated with lemons.

Positano Visitors Guide 04

Positano Hotels:

Palazzo Murat Hotel (book direct) is one of Positano’s most romantic hotels. The 4-star hotel is in a historic building in the center of Positano and has views of town and the sea. For a lower price option, try the Hotel Pensione Casa Guadagno (book direct), very highly rated by users on Venere. For more Positano hotel choices with user reviews and photos see Positano Hotels on Venere (book direct).

Positano Pictures:

See James Martin’s Positano Picture Gallery on Europe Travel.

Positano Attractions:

  • Swimming in the crystal clear waters and catching some sun on the beaches, both pebble and sand, are tops on the Positano to do list.
  • By the seaside, you can shop or have a fantastic seafood meal along the Spiaggia Grande.
  • Stroll along Via Cristoforo Colombo and enjoy the shops, luxury hotels, cafes, and fantastic views. The Scalinatella connects Punta Reginella on the shore with the highest part of Positano.
  • Santa Maria Assunta, Positano’s church, has a beautiful majolica dome, visible from many places.
  • Inside is an icon of the Black Madonna, painted in the 13th century in Byzantine style. Positano has many beautiful villas and palatial buildings and eight defense towers built in the 16th century.
  • The island of Capri can be visited by ferry or on a tour boat.
  • The Grotta la Porta cave where prehistoric remains were found is near Positano.
  • There are good hiking opportunities from Positano, both along the coast and inland.
  • From Positano you can visit other towns along the Amalfi Coast on the narrow but very scenic Amalfi Drive. Take a bus or taxi. Or take a boat ride along the coast if you prefer to travel by water.
